About seven years ago a dear friend was about to have her third of three children leave the nest. She had a very close family, like ours. Just thinking about what she must be going through made my heart squeeze. One day I exclaimed, "I don't know how you can stand watching your children leave. It must hurt so badly!"
To my surprise she laughed.
Then she told me something that I have held on to ever since (did I mention she is a very wise friend?). She said, when it's time for your kids to leave, you'll be ready. She went on to talk to me about how good God is. He worked in our hearts when it was time to have kids and He'll do the same when it's time to let them go.
When she said that I couldn't even fathom that I would ever, ever be ready to willing let my children walk out the door. More likely I'd be holding on to one leg as they tried to exit the building. But she was right. Now, I'm good with the whole thing.
At least that's what I keep telling myself!
